Trump's $1.4 B National Guard deployment in Washington D.C. set to continue through 2029

The Pentagon confirmed that the National Guard deployment in Washington, D.C., launched in August 2025 under President Donald Trump's "Make D.C. Safe and Beautiful" initiative, will remain in place until the end of his term in January 2029. The operation is projected to cost taxpayers about $1.4 billion, including $605 million for the broader initiative, $375 million for payroll and travel, and $230 million for housing, meals and other operational expenses.

Nearly 9,700 Guard members have rotated through the capital, responding to 788 medical emergencies, administering Narcan 325 times to reverse suspected opioid overdoses, reuniting 43 lost children with families, breaking up 262 fights, and assisting law‑enforcement agencies 479 times, according to interim commander Brig. Gen. Leland Blanchard. D.C. officials have criticized the mission as unnecessary and argue that soldiers are not trained for civilian policing duties.
