Trump's $1.8 B Anti‑Weaponization Fund Faces GOP Legislative Pushback

President Donald Trump's administration created a $1.8 billion “anti‑weaponization” fund as part of a settlement with the Internal Revenue Service after the president sought $10 billion in response to the disclosure of his tax records. The fund is intended to compensate individuals who claim to have been victims of government “weaponization.”

Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche is overseeing the program, but its criteria have drawn criticism, especially the possibility that participants in the Jan. 6 Capitol riot could receive payments. Republican lawmakers, including Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick, have joined Democrats such as Rep. Tom Suozzi in introducing legislation to prevent the use of taxpayer dollars for the fund. A coalition of plaintiffs has also filed a lawsuit to block payouts, citing legal and transparency concerns.

The controversy has highlighted a rare public rift within the Republican Party, with GOP members warning that the fund could harm the party’s image ahead of upcoming midterm elections. Legislative and legal challenges are ongoing.
