Trump's $1.8B Anti‑Weaponization Fund Attracts Jan 6 Rioters Seeking Payouts

The Trump administration has created an anti‑weaponization settlement fund of roughly $1.8 billion for people who claim they were victims of a politically weaponized government. More than five years after the Jan 6 Capitol attack, many of the rioters are filing claims to receive compensation, with some, such as South Carolina attorney David Johnston, offering to assist others for a 10% cut of any award, capped at $5,000. Oregon resident Pamela Hemphill, who served a 60‑day sentence, is seeking $5 million, stating, “I wouldn’t have been through all of this if Trump hadn’t lied about the election being stolen.” The fund’s formation has been frozen by a judge and no application process exists yet. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche says a yet‑to‑be‑named commission will decide eligibility based on factors like the individual's actions, sentence length, and jail time, leaving the ultimate scope of payouts uncertain.
