Trump’s 250‑Foot “Arc de Trump” Monument Gains Preliminary Approval

Donald Trump has proposed a 250‑foot triumphal arch, dubbed the “Arc de Trump,” to be built near Arlington National Cemetery and the Lincoln Memorial as a commemorative marker of America’s 250th anniversary. A panel of the National Capital Planning Commission has given the project preliminary approval, moving it toward a final vote in September that will also consider an exemption from the Height of Buildings Act, which normally caps structures at 130 feet.

The design has sparked intense criticism. Opponents say the arch would obscure historic views of the Lincoln Memorial and the cemetery, likening its neoclassical style to authoritarian monuments of the World War II era. A coalition of Vietnam‑war veterans, historic preservationists, and other groups has filed federal lawsuits, arguing the project bypasses the Commemorative Works Act and lacks congressional authorization. Legal and procedural hurdles remain as the proposal advances.
