Trump’s Iran Deal Erodes US Leverage and Undermines Israeli Strategy

Strategic studies scholar Phillips P. O’Brien warned that the United States now has virtually no leverage over Iran after President Trump’s recent agreement, calling the situation “extraordinary” and noting the administration cannot resort to military force or effective pressure.

In reaction to a Senate war‑powers resolution intended to curb further U.S. military action against Iran, Trump posted on social media that he still has Iran “on the ropes” and accused legislators of obstructing his efforts.

The Iran‑U.S. de‑escalation framework, signed under Trump, ends a four‑decade Israeli expectation of regime change in Tehran. Analysts say the deal strengthens Iran’s position, damages Prime Minister Netanyahu’s standing, and could enable Tehran to threaten vital shipping lanes such as the Strait of Hormuz.

Domestically, the Senate passed a bipartisan housing bill, but Trump stalled its signing, demanding Congress first pass the SAVE America Act, highlighting ongoing political friction within his administration.
