Trump's Reflecting Pool Renovation Faces Vandalism Claims and Security Boost

President Donald Trump opened the Great American State Fair in Washington and used the occasion to allege extensive vandalism of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, claiming six arrests and multiple citations. Public records, however, show only one person—former Olympian David Hearn—has been charged with misdemeanor destruction of government property.

In response to the alleged damage, the National Park Service installed at least nine surveillance camera sets and additional lighting around the pool, and the site was patrolled by dozens of National Guard members, U.S. Marshals, and Park Police. The pool, recently renovated for $16 million to a bright “American‑flag blue,” has suffered from an algal bloom, peeling paint, and reports of cuts several hundred feet long, prompting debate over whether the problems stem from vandalism or construction flaws.

The state fair itself drew very few visitors, with most of the fairgrounds largely empty despite the presence of attractions such as a Ferris wheel and a rodeo. Trump’s repeated statements about the pool’s condition have drawn scrutiny and calls for evidence from federal agencies.
