Trump's Threat to Cuba Raises US‑China‑Russia Tensions

Former U.S. President Donald Trump warned that his administration could take control of Cuba, suggesting the deployment of naval forces such as the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln to force a surrender after the resolution of tensions with Iran. Cuban President Miguel Díaz‑Canel rejected the threat and ordered preparations for a possible U.S. intervention.

The United States has signaled plans to send aircraft, ships and drones toward the island, prompting a strong response from China and Russia, which declared they would defend Cuba with “all their military force.” Chinese Foreign Ministry officials warned Washington that any coercive action would jeopardise regional peace, while Russian officials echoed similar commitments. Analysts note that a direct U.S.‑Cuba confrontation could quickly expand into a broader regional crisis involving the two nuclear powers and could threaten nearby Florida and the U.S. base at Guantánamo Bay.
