Trump's voting‑by‑mail order not yet acted on by federal agencies

President Donald Trump's March 31 executive order directing the creation of state citizenship lists and limiting the use of mail ballots has not been implemented by the Department of Homeland Security, the Social Security Administration or the U.S. Postal Service. Agency officials told a federal judge that they are still deliberating how to carry out the directive and have made no final decisions.

The Justice Department filed a brief asking the court to dismiss a Democrat‑led lawsuit and to refrain from blocking the order on the basis that the challenge is premature. A hearing is scheduled for May 14. Democrats argue the order oversteps presidential authority, could produce an unauthorized national voter list, and that the Postal Service lacks the power to regulate voting. Thirty‑seven Democratic senators have urged the Postal Service not to implement the rule.
