Trussell Trust reports rising food insecurity in the UK
A new report from the anti-poverty charity Trussell Trust reveals that nearly half of British families with disabled children have run out of food in the past year. The charity also noted that over one-third of all UK families with children have faced similar food shortages.
Economic modeling by WPI Economics, utilizing Office for Budget Responsibility forecasts, suggests that the number of people facing severe hardship could reach record levels by 2029. Projections indicate that approximately 9.1 million individuals—comprising 6.2 million adults and 2.9 million children—may be at risk of needing food bank services in the year leading up to March 2029.
The charity warns that the cost of living continues to impact those on the lowest incomes. While food parcel numbers saw a 12% decrease in 2025 compared to 2024 due to a slowdown in the rising cost of essentials, the long-term outlook remains critical for vulnerable households.
