TrustGH flags 6,000 suspected scam numbers in Ghana

TrustGH, a scam verification and reporting platform, has flagged more than 6,000 telephone numbers suspected of involvement in fraudulent activities in Ghana. The platform identified these numbers through community reports and open-source intelligence investigations conducted by cybersecurity professionals.

According to the analysis, approximately 50% of the reported scam numbers are linked to TikTok, making it the largest single source of reported scam activity in the database. Other significant channels include SMS and WhatsApp, while additional fraud has been traced to Facebook, Google Business Profiles, and fraudulent websites.

The investigations indicate that most schemes rely on social engineering rather than technical hacking. Fraudsters impersonate bank officials, government representatives, police officers, and business owners to build trust. Notably, over 90% of the reported cases involved attempts to collect Mobile Money payments or gain unauthorized access to Mobile Money accounts.

TrustGH is currently working with the Cybersecurity Authority and the Cyber Crime Unit of the Ghana Police Service to support investigations into these reported cases.
