TS Chanakya maritime institute served notice over cadet death

The Directorate General of Maritime Administration (DGMA) has issued a show-cause notice to TS Chanakya, a maritime training institute in Navi Mumbai, following the death of a cadet in May 2026.

An inquiry by the Mercantile Marine Department (MMD) revealed that the first-year BSc (Nautical Science) cadet had consumed alcohol with other students in a hostel room during an informal gathering in the early hours of May 28. The cadet was later found injured at the rear of the hostel and subsequently died at a hospital.

The investigation found that alcohol and cigarettes had been smuggled into the campus through a broken bathroom window and that gaps in the boundary wall allowed students to leave the premises. The DGMA has previously mandated a strict ban on alcohol, tobacco, and drugs on all registered campuses, noting that any infringement constitutes serious misconduct by both the student and the institute.
