TS-LKD leader supports potential Vilnius Mayor Benkunskas re-election
The leader of the Homeland Union – Lithuanian Christian Democrats (TS-LKD), Gabrielius Landsbergis, has expressed support for Vilnius Mayor Valdas Benkunskas should he choose to run for a second term. The party's official candidate for the capital's mayoralty is expected to be announced in October.
Landsbergis stated that the party's primary goal for the upcoming 2027 municipal elections is to overtake the Social Democratic Party in terms of total votes cast for party lists. He noted that in 2023, the TS-LKD trailed the Social Democrats by approximately 20,000 votes and aims to reduce the gap in the total number of council mandates.
Other political entities have already begun announcing candidates for the Vilnius mayoralty, including the Liberal Movement, the Freedom Party, and the National Union. Additionally, non-partisan candidates Artūras Zuokas and Aleksandras Nemunaitis have signaled their intentions to run. Direct elections for mayors and municipal councils are scheduled for the spring of 2027.
