TSA introduces new CT scanners with smaller openings for airport security
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is deploying new 3D computed tomography (CT) scanners at airports to enhance security screening. These advanced machines allow passengers to leave electronics and toiletries inside their bags, as the technology provides agents with detailed three-dimensional images of contents.
However, the new scanners feature a smaller opening than previous models—approximately half an inch smaller—to accommodate the advanced imaging technology. While the TSA warns that some larger carry-on items may not fit and might need to be checked, standard carry-on bags that adhere to airline size requirements (typically around 22 x 14 x 9 inches) should fit through the machines. The scanners currently measure 24.5 inches wide and 16.5 inches high.
