TSA introduces new standing requirements for US airport security officers
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has announced that Transportation Security Officers (TSOs) will no longer be permitted to sit while checking boarding passes and identification at security checkpoints. The agency stated this measure is necessary to ensure personnel remain “wachsam” (vigilant).
The American Federation of Government Employees Council, the union representing airport workers, has condemned the decision. This change is part of a broader set of strict regulations governing airport personnel worldwide, driven by security threats and operational requirements.
In the United States, TSA employees have been subject to random drug testing since the 2000s. Security clearances are mandatory for various airport roles, ranging from technical flight operations to retail and service positions behind security checkpoints.
