TSA issues Halloween costume and accessory travel guidelines
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has issued specific guidelines for travelers carrying Halloween costume accessories through airport security. While costumes themselves are generally permitted, certain props and materials are subject to strict restrictions depending on whether they are in carry-on or checked luggage.
Weapon-like props, including realistic toy guns, swords, knives, lightsabers, and pitchforks, are prohibited in carry-on bags. While some may be permitted in checked luggage, the final decision rests with the TSA officer on duty. Props depicting explosives, such as grenades or rocket launchers, are banned from both carry-on and checked luggage.
Regarding cosmetics, liquid makeup in carry-on bags must adhere to the 3-1-1 rule (containers of 3.4 ounces or less in a single quart-sized bag). Powder makeup exceeding 12 ounces in carry-on luggage must be placed in a separate bin for X-ray screening or moved to checked luggage. Travelers wearing costumes through security are advised to remove any metal components and pack them in their carry-on bags.
