TSA launches new airport access and liquid rules for PreCheck members

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has launched ‘Gateside by TSA PreCheck’, a new program allowing eligible PreCheck members to pass through security without a plane ticket. Currently available at 13 U.S. airports, including Los Angeles, Dallas-Fort Worth, and San Diego, the initiative enables non-travelers to access secure gate areas to meet or see off friends and family, or visit airport dining and retail. To participate, members must apply online one to three days in advance and receive approval.

In a separate technological shift, the TSA is considering allowing TSA PreCheck passengers to carry full water bottles through security checkpoints. This potential change is driven by the implementation of advanced 3D Computed Tomography (CT) scanners. These high-resolution scanners use automated detection algorithms to distinguish between potable water and dangerous liquids without requiring passengers to open their bags. This pilot program would be limited to airports equipped with this specific technology.
