TSA regulations for transporting firearms during hunting trips
Travelers transporting firearms for hunting trips must adhere to specific TSA and airline regulations. Firearms must be transported in hard-sided, locked cases and must be unloaded. Passengers are required to notify both the airline and the TSA regarding the presence of firearms and ammunition.
Ammunition is prohibited in carry-on luggage and must be placed in checked baggage. It must be securely boxed or included within a hard-sided case containing an unloaded firearm. Small arms ammunition, including shotgun shells, must be packaged in containers made of fiber, wood, plastic, or metal specifically designed for ammunition and declared to the airline. Firearm magazines and clips, whether empty or loaded, must be securely boxed or kept within the locked hard-sided case.
