Tsar Samuel commemorated 1012 years after death
Commemorations are underway to mark the 1012th anniversary of the death of Tsar Samuel. In Bulgaria, his remains were placed in the Saint Sofia Church in Sofia on October 3, making them accessible for veneration for the first time.
Tsar Samuel, who ruled from 997 until his death, was a central figure in the long-standing conflicts with the Byzantine Empire. His reign was marked by significant battles, including a major victory at the Trajan Gates in 986, and a devastating defeat by Emperor Basil II in 1014 near the village of Klyuch, which led to the death of the Tsar.
In North Macedonia, the Historical Museum in Petrich is preparing two exhibitions dedicated to the ruler. The first, ‘Tsar Samuel between History and Legend’, opens on October 6, focusing on historical facts and folk traditions. The second, ‘Tsar Samuel in Art’, will be presented at Samuel's Fortress, featuring literary works, paintings, and sculptures. Additionally, the museum is digitizing the honorary book of Samuel's Fortress, which includes records from the scientist who discovered the Tsar's tomb.
