Tschabalala Self unveils ‘Lady in Blue’ sculpture in London

New York-based artist Tschabalala Self has unveiled ‘Lady in Blue’ as the 16th commission for the Fourth Plinth in London’s Trafalgar Square. The bronze sculpture depicts an anonymous young Black woman wearing a form-fitting blue dress, matching heels, and glass beaded jewelry. The work is patinated with pigment derived from lapis lazuli.

Self stated the piece aims to represent a contemporary ‘everywoman’ and a personhood that transcends identity politics, providing a representation of all human beings. The sculpture is intended to shift focus from historical monuments of monarchs and military commanders toward a shared collective future.

The installation will remain on display in Trafalgar Square for two years. Following this period, the sculpture is scheduled to be relocated permanently to Fornebu, Norway, after being acquired by a private foundation to ensure continued public accessibility. The Fourth Plinth program is supported by the Mayor of London, Arts Council England, and Bloomberg Philanthropies.
