TSE Minister's ruling leads TV Globo to cancel presidential debate

TV Globo canceled its scheduled presidential debate following judicial rulings by the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) and the Supreme Federal Court (STF). The controversy began when TSE Minister Estela Aranha prohibited the broadcaster from displaying an empty pulpit to represent the absence of candidate Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. The minister also ruled that other candidates could not simulate questions directed at the absent candidate, stating that such measures would prevent the restriction of a candidate's political rights.

TV Globo cited “legal insecurity” and “undue interference” as the reasons for the cancellation. Media associations, including Abert, ANJ, and Aner, expressed indignation, labeling the judicial interventions as an “aggression to press freedom” that disregarded previously agreed-upon rules. The situation also saw candidate Flávio Bolsonaro withdraw from the event after initially confirming his attendance.

Public scrutiny has also focused on Minister Estela Aranha’s background. Reports highlight her previous roles within the Lula administration, including serving as Secretary of Digital Rights under Flávio Dino, and her history of political donations to left-wing candidates. Critics and journalists have questioned the neutrality of the judiciary in light of these decisions and her professional ties to the current government.
