Spanish judicial leaders call for protection of judicial independence
During the opening of the 2026-2027 judicial year, high-ranking judicial officials in Spain addressed the importance of judicial independence and institutional stability.
In Valencia, Manuel Baeza, president of the Tribunal Superior de Justicia de la Comunitat Valenciana (TSJCV), called for an end to ‘excessive or out-of-context criticism’ that could erode public trust in the justice system. He emphasized that judicial independence is a fundamental guarantee for citizens and essential for maintaining the balance of powers and the rule of law. The ceremony was attended by regional authorities, including President Juanfran Pérez Llorca.
In the Balearic Islands, Carlos Gómez, president of the Tribunal Superior de Justicia de les Illes Balears (TSJIB), highlighted the creation of new judicial positions following the implementation of the Public Justice Service Efficiency Law. He noted that 13 of the 39 required positions have been created, with more expected by 2027. Gómez also addressed the need for judicial impartiality amidst social and political polarization.
