TSMC begins 1.4nm pilot production and expands advanced node capacity
TSMC has initiated pilot production for its next-generation 1.4nm (A14) technology at its facilities in Hsinchu and Taichung, Taiwan. This process is expected to enter mass production in 2028, offering significant improvements over the 2nm node, including a potential 10%–15% speed increase or a 25%–30% reduction in energy consumption.
To meet the growing demand for AI and flagship mobile chips, TSMC is aggressively expanding its 2nm and 3nm capacities. This includes a planned 2027 rollout for 3nm production at its Arizona facility in the United States. Additionally, TSMC is collaborating with ASML to advance High-NA EUV lithography technology, specifically working to transition from 6-inch to 12-inch photomasks to optimize the angstrom-era nodes.
In Singapore, Taiwanese semiconductor firms are diversifying their supply chains. A joint venture between VIS and NXP, VSMC, is scheduled to open its 12-inch fab on September 28, with mass production expected in early 2027. Meanwhile, UMC is also expanding its presence in Singapore, with plans to increase capacity at its P4 facility for silicon photonics by 2028.
Apple is also preparing for the transition to 2nm technology with its upcoming A20 Pro chip for the iPhone 18 Pro. Preliminary analyses indicate the chip will utilize Gate-All-Around (GAA) transistor architecture to improve current control and energy efficiency.
