TSMC evaluates Texas expansion with potential six-fab semiconductor campus

TSMC is reportedly evaluating a major expansion in Texas to meet the surging demand for artificial intelligence chips. The proposed project, currently in its preliminary stages, could involve the construction of a new semiconductor campus featuring up to six advanced wafer fabrication plants.

Each individual facility is estimated to require a minimum investment of $20 billion. This potential expansion aims to serve major American clients, including Apple, NVIDIA, and AMD, and would further diversify TSMC's manufacturing footprint beyond its existing $26.5 billion commitment in Arizona.

The realization of this project is heavily contingent on U.S. political decisions, specifically whether Congress extends the 35% semiconductor manufacturing tax credit provided by the CHIPS Act, which is set to expire at the end of this year.

Additionally, reports suggest TSMC is exploring a potential partnership with Elon Musk’s startup, Terafab, which could serve as an anchor client for the Texas operations. While Intel has previously been linked to Terafab, some reports indicate that collaboration between the two has seen little progress.
