TSMC evaluates potential multi-billion dollar chip expansion in Texas
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) is evaluating a potential multi-billion dollar expansion in Texas, which could include up to six advanced wafer fabrication plants. This proposed project would be in addition to the $265 billion already committed to its operations in Arizona. The decision regarding the Texas investment may depend on whether the U.S. Congress extends manufacturing tax credits provided by the CHIPS Act.
TSMC is facing intense pressure to increase production capacity to meet the surging demand for artificial intelligence chips from major clients like Nvidia, AMD, and Apple. The company has reported that its advanced process technologies, including 2-nanometer and 3-nanometer nodes, are seeing significant demand. TSMC is scheduled to release its third-quarter earnings on October 15, a key event for investors tracking the AI sector.
In addition to TSMC, other semiconductor players are expanding in the region. Micron is rapidly increasing its manufacturing footprint in Taiwan to meet demand for high-bandwidth memory (HBM) and advanced DRAM. TSMC's advanced manufacturing capacity is reportedly fully booked through the first half of 2028.
