TSMC to build new 3nm plant in Tainan, Taiwan
TSMC has announced plans to construct a new 3nm semiconductor manufacturing facility in the Southern Taiwan Science Park, Tainan, with mass production expected to begin in the first half of 2028. The Tainan City Government has pledged full support to facilitate the project, including assistance with land acquisition, water, electricity, public facilities, and the acceleration of administrative procedures.
Since establishing its presence in the Southern Taiwan Science Park, TSMC has completed 20 wafer and packaging plants, focusing on 3nm and 5nm advanced processes. Total investment in the region has exceeded NT$1.86 trillion, creating over 11,300 high-tech jobs. This expansion solidifies Tainan's position as one of the world's most concentrated hubs for advanced semiconductor manufacturing.
The city government is also coordinating the development of several industrial zones to address resource shortages in land, power, and talent. Notably, a 2nm plant is scheduled to begin construction on land owned by the Tainan City Government, marking the first time TSMC has built a facility on municipal-owned land. According to the National Science and Technology Council, the Tainan Science Park's revenue from January to August reached NT$2.34 trillion, a 33.53% increase compared to the same period last year.
