TSMC to implement 3-nanometer technology at second Kumamoto plant
TSMC is advancing its semiconductor manufacturing presence in Japan by upgrading the technology planned for its second facility in Kumamoto. The company announced that the new plant will incorporate 3-nanometer technology, a significant technological leap from the original plan which focused on 6 and 12-nanometer processes.
Japan Advanced Semiconductor Manufacturing (JASM), a company primarily controlled by TSMC, is overseeing the construction in the Kumamoto prefecture on Kyushu island. This expansion is part of Japan's broader strategy to bolster economic security and stabilize supply chains for critical sectors such as artificial intelligence, robotics, autonomous vehicles, and advanced electronics.
In February 2024, Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) approved a subsidy of up to 732,000 million yen (approximately $4.9 billion USD) to support the JASM project and its original manufacturing goals.
