Tsuen Wan street shops to trial food-waste recycling pilot

The Environmental Protection Department will launch a six-month Street Shop Food Waste Recycling Pilot Scheme in Hong Kong starting next month. The trial will focus on the Chuen Lung Street and Ho Pui Street areas in Tsuen Wan, targeting over 100 meat shops, eateries, and fruit-and-vegetable stalls.

The department plans to establish three collection points using six 120-litre bins. Senior Environmental Protection Officer Mok Yee-ying stated that the location was chosen due to the high density and variety of shops, as well as low existing recycling rates caused by distance to collection points and lack of awareness among shop owners.

To address hygiene concerns, bins will be available from 9am to 9pm. Contractors will replace used bins with clean containers during collections to prevent odors and pests. District councillor Ng Chun-yu expressed concerns regarding the capacity of the bins, potential hygiene issues like rats, and whether collection times align with trader schedules.
