Tsuguharu Foujita exhibitions held in Karuizawa and Shiga
Exhibitions celebrating the life and work of Tsuguharu Foujita, also known as Léonard Foujita, are currently being held at two Japanese museums.
The Karuizawa Ando Museum is hosting “Tsuguharu Foujita in New York,” an exhibition focusing on the artist's ten-month stay in New York in 1949. This period, occurring after he left Japan to escape domestic political pressures and wartime responsibility issues, saw him exploring new motifs and techniques. The exhibition has surpassed 10,000 visitors and is scheduled to run until January 11, 2027.
Meanwhile, the Sagawa Museum in Shiga Prefecture is hosting an exhibition to commemorate the 140th anniversary of the artist's birth. This showcase includes approximately 140 works, including some being exhibited in Japan for the first time. The exhibition highlights Foujita's journey from his early years in Tokyo to his success in France, where he eventually obtained French citizenship and changed his name.
