Tsumura survey reveals high rates of menstrual pain suppression in Kyushu

A survey conducted by Tsumura Co., Ltd. involving 1,000 residents of the Kyushu region highlights significant challenges regarding menstruation and Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS). The study found that 67.6% of respondents who experience menstruation engage in “hidden endurance” (kakure gaman), a term defined by Tsumura as continuing work or household chores despite physical or mental discomfort.

Among younger demographics, the tendency to suppress symptoms is even higher, with approximately 80% of individuals in their 20s and 30s reporting such experiences. While 90% of those affected by menstrual pain wish for others to understand that the severity varies by individual, 68.7% find it difficult to communicate their struggles to those around them. The primary reason cited for not speaking up was a desire to avoid causing concern for others.

On the side of male respondents, 74.6% expressed a desire to provide support but noted they do not know how to respond appropriately. The survey suggests that the difficulty in communicating symptoms creates an environmental burden that compounds the physical distress of PMS.
