Tsunami the search-and-rescue dog honored with statue in Venezuela

A bronze statue has been unveiled in Venezuela to honor Tsunami, a Border Collie recognized for his lifesaving work as a search-and-rescue dog. The tribute celebrates his efforts following powerful earthquakes that struck the country in June 2026, where he is credited with helping to locate at least 26 survivors trapped in rubble.

Tsunami’s career began after he was rescued from an abusive household as a puppy in 2017. He was later taken in by Jorge Beens, the founder of the Venezuelan canine search and rescue organization K-Sar Ecid. Under Beens’ guidance, Tsunami underwent specialized training to utilize his sense of smell to detect people in complex, collapsed structures.

The unveiling ceremony included both Tsunami and his handler, marking a celebration of the dog’s dedication and his successful final rescue mission prior to retirement.
