Tsuruya Yoshinobu hosts traditional Kyoto confectionery workshop
Tsuruya Yoshinobu, a traditional confectionery manufacturer founded in 1803, held a special summer workshop for families at its main store in Kyoto. The event, titled ‘Let’s Make and Eat Kyo-gashi with Tsuruya Yoshinobu!’, was designed to introduce children and their families to the culture and charm of traditional Japanese sweets (wagashi).
Participants, including students from elementary to junior high school, engaged in an educational session led by veteran confectioners. The workshop included hands-on instruction for creating two types of seasonal sweets: ‘Asa no Iro’, a morning-themed design featuring morning glories, and ‘Akikusa’, made using the kinton technique.
Following the crafting session, participants enjoyed their handmade sweets paired with matcha in the store’s tea room. The event aimed to preserve and promote Kyoto’s confectionery heritage through interactive, multi-generational experiences.
