Tuberculosis outbreaks reported in Salta prisons and Guayaquil school

Health authorities in Salta, Argentina, have confirmed 19 cases of tuberculosis within the provincial prison system. A 25-year-old inmate at the Villa Las Rosas prison is in critical condition and currently requires respiratory assistance at Hospital del Milagro. Medical professionals are investigating whether the patient has developed tuberculous meningoencephalitis or if there is resistance to the antibiotic rifampicin.

Public Health Minister Federico Mangione stated that while the situation is under control and not an epidemic, prison overcrowding is complicating efforts to isolate patients and track contacts. Data from the National Committee for the Prevention of Torture indicates that tuberculosis poses a significantly higher mortality risk in detention settings.

In Guayaquil, Ecuador, a suspected case of tuberculosis at a school in the 9 de Octubre district prompted a temporary suspension of classes. While authorities have not issued an official statement, educational representatives have advised parents to monitor students for symptoms such as persistent cough, fever, and weight loss.
