TUC warns online manosphere misogyny is impacting workplaces
The Trades Union Congress (TUC) has issued a warning regarding the influence of the ‘manosphere’—a collection of online communities focused on masculinity—on workplace culture. A literature review commissioned by the TUC and conducted by Dr. Olivia Brown of the University of Bath suggests that engagement with this content can shift views on gender roles and increase the acceptance of misogynistic language and behavior.
Research indicates that seemingly innocuous topics, such as gym, gaming, and dating content, can serve as entry points into more extreme ideologies. This digital ecosystem often rewards anger and hostility toward women with attention and financial opportunities. The findings highlight a process of radicalization by escalation, where users move from mild complaints about dating to conspiracy theories and dehumanizing language.
The TUC noted that while evidence of the direct impact on workplaces is currently limited and requires further study, there is a clear link between misogynistic content and potential pipelines to far-right communities and male violence.
