Tucson arts community faces gallery downsizing and administrative clarifications

The Tucson arts community is facing significant changes regarding public art administration and local gallery spaces. The Arts Foundation for Tucson and Southern Arizona issued a clarification regarding its role in public art, noting that it administers projects exclusively for the City of Tucson. The Foundation clarified that it does not manage public art for Pima County, which is handled by Art State Arizona, nor does it oversee murals on private property.

Separately, the long-standing Etherton Gallery has announced it will downsize and vacate its Barrio Viejo location by the end of the year. Founder Terry Etherton stated that the gallery's lease expires in late 2026, but a request for an extension was denied by property owner Bacon Industries. The gallery will move to a smaller office space that lacks exhibition capacity, marking a significant shift for the institution which has specialized in contemporary and twentieth-century fine art photography for forty-six years.
