Tucumán advances vaccine research and epidemiological surveillance

Tucumán has established itself as an international reference center for vaccine research through a decade of collaboration between public hospitals, private laboratories, and the Mayo Clinic. A notable success includes a global clinical trial for a vaccine against respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). The Maternidad de Tucumán was the leading center globally for enrolling pregnant patients in this study, which aimed to allow mothers to pass antibodies to their infants via the placenta. Following the trial, Argentina incorporated the vaccine into its national immunization schedule in 2024.

In parallel, the Tucumán Ministry of Public Health has reinforced epidemiological surveillance to monitor transmissible diseases. Health Minister Luis Medina Ruiz expressed concern regarding the international circulation of measles in countries such as the United States, Canada, and Peru, noting the risk of importation through travel. Authorities are urging the population to complete vaccination schedules to prevent potential outbreaks. While monitoring respiratory and mosquito-borne illnesses, officials reported a favorable local scenario regarding dengue and chikungunya.
