Specialists at the Tucumán Historical Archive have recovered an unpublished four-page letter dated January 26, 1833. The document was sent by the then-Governor of Buenos Aires, Juan Ramón Balcarce, to the Governor of Tucumán, Alejandro Heredia, to report the British occupation of the Malvinas Islands.

Based on a report from José María Pinedo, commander of the Argentine schooner Sarandí, the letter provides a detailed, hour-by-hour account of the events in Puerto Soledad. It describes how the British corvette HMS Clio, commanded by John Onslow, arrived on January 2, 1833, and demanded that the Argentine flag be lowered within 24 hours and the territory evacuated.

Balcarce characterized the incident as a “scandalous aggression” and an act of force committed “in dishonor of the Argentine Flag,” noting the irony given the existing relations of “friendship and commerce” between the United Provinces of the Río de la Plata and Great Britain. The discovery highlights the significant political weight Tucumán held within the regional organization of that era.
