Tudanca cattle auction held at Sotama Estate in Cantabria
The traditional Tudanca cattle auction took place at the Sotama Estate in Cillorigo de Liébana, aimed at preserving and improving the genetics of this emblematic Cantabrian breed. During the event, 16 specimens were auctioned off to members of the Tudanca cattle breeders association, which consists of over 500 members.
María Jesús Susinos, the Counselor for Rural Development, Livestock, Fisheries, and Food, attended the auction to recognize the commitment of local farmers to maintaining this regional livestock heritage. The Sotama Estate, owned by the Government of Cantabria, maintains approximately 120 head of cattle dedicated to the selection and genetic improvement of breeders. The best males are subsequently provided to associated farmers to strengthen the regional Tudanca cattle population.
In addition to the 16 auctioned specimens, 16 calves were awarded to the association for a three-year period. The animals are technically appraised before being distributed among members at affordable prices to ensure access to high-quality genetic stock.
