Tufan Erhurman prioritizes human rights for children in Cyprus
Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman has stated that the rights of children from mixed marriages, Maronite children, and students at the Greek Cypriot school in Rizokarpaso are human rights issues that should not be subject to political exploitation or conditions.
Erhurman noted that many families and athletes face significant obstacles due to their parents’ origins or places of birth. These challenges include the loss of scholarships, difficulties obtaining visas, and being unable to participate in international competitions or cultural activities. He emphasized that he is working to resolve these issues gradually to prevent irreversible consequences for young people.
Erhurman referenced UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, who included several confidence-building measures—such as citizenship for children of mixed marriages and mine clearance—on a priority list. In response, Republic of Cyprus government spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis stated that granting citizenship to children of mixed marriages is governed by legal provisions and EU status rather than being a simple confidence-building measure.
