Turkish agricultural producers face rising costs and low market prices

Agricultural producers across Turkey are facing significant economic challenges due to rising input costs and low market prices. In the Black Sea region, hazelnut producers report substantial losses, with one example citing a 500,000 TL deficit after expenses exceeded revenues. Similarly, almond and grape growers are struggling with price uncertainty and the abandonment of orchards.

In Aydın, the decline of cotton production in the Söke Plain and rising costs for livestock feed are driving small family businesses out of the sector. In Çorum, local representatives have brought concerns regarding production costs and the need for fair market value to the Turkish Union of Agricultural Chambers (TZOB).

Experts and local leaders, including Sinan Kaya in Bursa, highlight a systemic disconnect where producers struggle to cover debts while consumers face high retail prices. This gap is attributed to the complex supply chain, including intermediaries, logistics, and storage costs. Calls for better agricultural support systems, improved rural infrastructure, and strategic long-term planning are increasing to ensure the sustainability of the sector.
