Tufts University studies link between dogs and adolescent mental health

Researchers at Tufts University are conducting the ‘Teen & Dog Study’ to investigate how the bond between adolescents and their dogs influences emotional wellbeing and stress management. Led by professor Megan Mueller, the five-year study began in February 2024 and focuses on 514 individuals aged 13 to 17 who experience high levels of social anxiety.

The study tracks physiological measures, social wellbeing, and coping strategies to determine if a strong connection with a pet helps teenagers navigate difficult situations and anxiety more effectively over time.
