Tukes identifies safety defects in several water faucets sold in Finland
The Finnish Safety and Chemicals Agency (Tukes) has identified safety and compliance issues in several kitchen, sink, and shower faucets sold in Finland. Out of 12 faucets tested, eight were found to have deficiencies.
Six faucets failed zinc loss resistance tests, with zinc depletion depths ranging from 342 to 561 micrometers, exceeding the national limit of 200 micrometers. This phenomenon can cause brass components to become porous and brittle, potentially leading to leaks. While Tukes notes the risk of property damage from such leaks is low, zinc loss does not pose a health risk.
Additionally, one shower faucet exceeded national limits for dissolved lead. Testing showed 11 micrograms of lead per sample, surpassing the maximum allowed 5 micrograms. While the risk of lead exposure is considered low if the faucet is used only for showering, Tukes advises running water for some time if the faucet is used for drinking water.
Responsible companies have voluntarily removed the non-compliant products from the market following notification from Tukes.
