Tukur Buratai urges Nigerians to resist foreign scrutiny of Tinubu

Former Nigerian Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai (retd.), has urged Nigerians to resist foreign interference following a legal development in the United States involving President Bola Tinubu.

A United States District Court for the District of Columbia has reportedly set a deadline of August 28, 2026, for President Tinubu, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the Department of Justice to oppose the release of documents. These documents are allegedly linked to drug-trafficking investigations involving the President from approximately 33 years ago.

In a position paper titled ‘Nigeria First: A Case for Protecting National Sovereignty and Dignity,’ Buratai argued that the potential disclosure of these documents could damage Nigeria’s international reputation, economic prospects, and global standing. He stated that the issue extends beyond the President’s personal reputation, asserting that the world may associate the allegations with the nation as a whole. Buratai also questioned whether leaders should be judged by actions from their youth rather than their decades of subsequent public service.
