Tulane University expands engineering and space science programs
Tulane University has announced a significant expansion of its School of Science and Engineering, aimed at meeting the demands of high-growth industries in the Gulf South and beyond. Starting in the fall of 2027, the university will reintroduce bachelor’s degrees in mechanical and electrical engineering, disciplines that were previously eliminated following a post-Hurricane Katrina restructuring.
In addition to these majors, Tulane will launch a space science and engineering minor in 2027. This new minor is part of the school’s ‘1,000 Day Plan’ to expand research and education. Faculty noted that the move leverages the region’s growing space economy, which includes the NASA Michoud Assembly Facility and a proposed SpaceX facility in south Louisiana.
The expanded curriculum is designed to prepare students for advanced career pathways in fields such as robotics, semiconductors, quantum technology, and advanced manufacturing. University President Michael A. Fitts stated that these programs aim to drive innovation and economic impact while addressing complex societal problems.
