Tulane University to lead $500 million Charity Hospital redevelopment
Tulane University has announced a $500 million project to redevelop the historic Charity Hospital in New Orleans into a biomedical research hub. The project aims to transform the 1930s-era art deco building, which was shuttered following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina in 2005, into a center for innovation.
The redevelopment will house the Celia Scott Weatherhead School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine and the Tulane Innovation Institute. Construction is scheduled to begin this fall, with the university aiming to occupy the building by 2029. The initiative is supported by various entities, including the state, city funding, BioDistrict New Orleans, and the Goldring Family Foundation.
Economically, the project is expected to create more than 2,400 permanent jobs and generate $530 million in annual economic impact. The construction phase itself is projected to create 7,300 jobs and produce $10.5 million in state tax revenue. This revitalization marks a significant shift for the site, which served as a critical safety-net hospital for over 250 years.
