Tulsi Gabbard Resigns as U.S. Director of National Intelligence to Support Husband's Cancer Fight

On June 2, Tulsi Gabbard announced she will resign as Director of National Intelligence, saying, “I must submit my resignation… My husband, Abraham, has recently been diagnosed with an extremely rare form of bone cancer.” She said she will step down at the end of the month to care for her husband.

President Donald Trump named Bill Pulte, the director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency, as acting DNI—a choice criticised for lacking intelligence experience. Analysts and some lawmakers have suggested Rep. Rick Crawford, longtime member and chair of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, as a more qualified permanent replacement.

The resignation marks the end of Gabbard’s 16‑month tenure leading a $110 billion intelligence apparatus, and the transition may affect ongoing intelligence operations and reform efforts.
