Tulum airport faces airline shifts as Aeroméxico and Volaris suspend flights

The Felipe Carrillo Puerto International Airport in Tulum is experiencing significant shifts in airline operations following the departure of Aeroméxico and an announced suspension by Volaris. Aeroméxico ceased operations at the terminal on September 30, citing market conditions and route optimization strategies. Volaris has also announced it will temporarily suspend flights to and from Tulum starting January 7, 2027, due to high operating costs and low occupancy levels.

In response to these departures, Mexicana de Aviación is increasing its presence at the terminal, alongside Viva Aerobus, which continues to maintain domestic flights. David Ortiz Mena, president of the Mexican Caribbean Hotel Council, noted that while the loss of flights may impact the destination's image, it represents a learning curve for the new airport. He emphasized that the Cancun International Airport remains the primary hub for international passengers entering the state.

These adjustments occur amid a decline in passenger movement. Data shows that between January and June 2026, the Tulum airport handled approximately 471,500 passengers, representing a 33.2 percent decrease compared to the same period in 2025.
