Tulum begins demolition of ‘wall of shame’ to restore archaeological site access
Demolition has begun on the structure known locally as the ‘muro de la vergüenza’ (wall of shame) at the entrance to the Tulum archaeological zone. The structure, built as part of the Parque del Jaguar project, had been criticized by merchants and visitors for blocking the traditional path to the ruins and for housing non-functional bathrooms and drinking fountains.
The removal is part of the federal ‘Tulum Renace’ program, which aims to establish a tourist corridor connecting local shops, artisan stalls, and guides to the site. President Claudia Sheinbaum previously identified the wall as a barrier to direct access.
In addition to the demolition, transportation services for tourists have been updated. The previous ‘trenecito’ service has been replaced by electric carts, which transport visitors from the commercial area to the ruins for a fee of 20 pesos per person.
