Tulum expands security camera network to over 1,850 units
The municipal government of Tulum has expanded its security camera network from 400 to more than 1,850 active cameras. Mayor Diego Castañón Trejo stated that this increase in surveillance has contributed to a reduction in homicide rates by as much as 80 percent, though he did not specify the exact timeframe or baseline for this figure.
The expansion was facilitated by local businesses, which are now required to install surveillance systems as a condition of their operating licenses. This arrangement has integrated private equipment into the municipal command and control center (C2). The mayor credited the results to the coordination between the public security secretariat, security institutions, and citizen participation.
