Tulum Mayor reports beach improvements and inspects new shopping center
Tulum Mayor Diego Castañón Trejo has reported improvements to local beaches following recent rainfall, estimating that shorelines are now between 70 and 80 percent clean of sargassum. To encourage tourism during a year of record-breaking macroalgae levels, the mayor plans to release video updates every two days showing the current state of the sand. The cleanup efforts have been supported by the addition of 50 workers to the state Zona Federal Marítimo Terrestre and federal funding.
In a separate development for the municipality’s economy, Mayor Castañón Trejo inspected the construction site of Centro Tulum, the town’s first formal shopping center. The project is expected to create up to 900 jobs and will house 60 retail, service, and dining spaces. Confirmed tenants for the complex include major brands such as Cinépolis, Chedraui, Starbucks, and Domino’s.
