Tulum treasurer Vicente Aldape detained at Cancun airport, resigns

Municipal treasurer Vicente Francisco Aldape Moncada was stopped by the Guardia Nacional at the security check of Terminal 2 in Cancun International Airport on 2 July 2026. Authorities found one or two .22‑calibre firearms – described as weapons of exclusive army use – and cash that was not declared. He was placed in the custody of the Federal Prosecutor’s Office (FGR) in Benito Juárez, Quintana Roo.

Aldape submitted his resignation the following day, which the Tulum city council acknowledged. Mayor Diego Castañón’s administration has not commented on the incident. The case has sparked political attention in Quintana Roo and comes amid reports of financial strain for the tourism‑dependent municipality, which has been seeking credit to meet its obligations. The investigation into the alleged illegal weapons possession continues.
